City beautification project brightens railroad crossing in Jamestown

A city beautification project aims to

brighten up a spot

near the railroad tracks in Jamestown, according to Paulette Ritter, co-chair of the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee.

Two planters with sunflower murals sit south of the railroad crossing at 3rd Avenue Northwest. Linda Roesch donated her time and supplies for the two sunflower paintings.

The location formerly had concrete blocks there. Those were removed and replaced with the two planters that are 3 to 4 feet high and about 12 feet long.

Some grasses and daylilies were planted in the planters. Then the two paintings were installed onto the planters.

Moisture in the ground going into spring planting

should be adequate

, according to Ashley Wolff, Stutsman County Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources.

“As of last week, we were considered in a minimal drought,” she said, referring to rains occurring April 15-16. “We are out of that this week. The moisture content is considered adequate.”

According to North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network station records 10 miles west of Jamestown, the area has received about 2.4 inches of rain since the first of the year as of April 29.

Any additional moisture in the upcoming weeks will be welcome “as long as it doesn’t delay planting,” Wolff said.

Wolff said few farmers are in the field although many are finishing any planning and maintenance to prepare for fieldwork.

Colby Schrenk, 8, learned his wish

was being granted

through Make-A-Wish North Dakota on Wednesday, May 1, in the Nelson Family Bubble at the University of Jamestown campus. He was surrounded by family and friends, including multiple current and former Jamestown High School football players.

Colby, a native of Ypsilanti, North Dakota, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a disease that impacts a person’s white and red blood cell count.

Doctors officially told the family that Colby was in remission in February 2024.
