Ron DeSantis is backing down.
The Florida governor ended his 2024 presidential campaign on Sunday, less than 48 hours before the New Hampshire primary, a contest that he had virtually no chance of winning. The decision comes less than a week after DeSantis finished in a distant second place in the Iowa caucuses.
DeSantis’ decision to drop out of the presidential contest marks the first electoral defeat of his more-than decade-long political career. With his White House campaign now behind him, he’ll return to Florida to finish out the final three years of his last term in the governor’s mansion — the very office that made him a presidential prospect in the first place.
