A Shawnee County District Court judge on June 13 found Joshua Garcia guilty as a juvenile of crimes linked to a March 2023 Topeka shooting death, said Katie Garceran, public information officer for the office of Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay.
Garcia was adjudicated as being guilty of reckless but unintentional second-degree murder and criminal use of weapons linked to the death of Kaleb Lane, 13, of Topeka.
Kaleb, an eighth-grader who attended Eisenhower Middle School, died as a result of an accidental shooting, The Capital-Journal was told in March 2023 by Topeka USD 501 superintendent Tiffany Anderson.
The shooting occurred in the 1300 block of S.W. Garfield Avenue, according to Topeka police.
They said they arrested a 14-year-old male youth, whose identity wasn’t made public at the time.
The district attorney’s office wasn’t revealing Garcia’s age on Thursday.
