People in DC hit pools, patios to beat extreme summer heat

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Lots of people spent the day outside despite the heat. Some chose to spend time on patios while others cooled off in the pool.

Summertime brings people out no matter the temperature.

That was the case at Dacha Beer Garden in Shaw, where some came specifically for the shade and misters.

“We’ve got the misters going 24/7 as you can see just to keep it as cool as possible,” said Galen Gossman, the manager at Dacha Beer Garden.

“It feels a lot better, but it’s really bad,” said Jacob Saylor.

In between the beer, Jacob Saylor says he’s staying hydrated.

“Drinking water, obviously, Gatorade, staying inside in the air conditioning,” shared Saylor.

Employees make sure to take several breaks too.

“Everyone’s getting a water at every chance. Definitely making sure that they’re staying cool, and going inside if they need to. And definitely taking care of the guests with water as well,” said Gossman.

It’s needed on a day when the feels like the temperature reached 109 degrees.

“Personally I like the heat but this is a bit much,” said Seth Hanselman.

“The summer heat is the worst thing about living in Washington, D.C.,” said Brian Phaelan.

Regardless of the numbers, sitting on the patio in Dupont Circle, Phaelan still took his coffee hot.

“I think hot coffee is the only true form, to serve coffee. So I will drink hot coffee. anytime hot, cold,” shared Phaelan.

Most people probably prefer cooler liquids, found at Fort Stanton Pool in Southeast.

“It feels like 1,000 degrees and the pool actually feels really nice,” said Brookelynn Crimtty.

“I don’t let my kids go outside in the heat. I wait until the sun goes down,” added Melisa Dunn.

D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation Director Thennie Freeman said during extreme heat everyone has to get out of the pool every 45 minutes to allow lifeguards to cool off for 15 minutes.

Cooling centers are also available in every ward in the district.

“We’re seeing an influx in our cooling centers,” said Freeman. “People are coming in to take a break from the direct sunlight and get cool.”

Mayor Bowser announced an extended heat emergency that will remain activated throughout the weekend and into Tuesday of next week, or until conditions improve.
