One man dead after alleged July 4 homicide in Wisconsin, suspect taken into custody


COLUMBUS, Wis. (WFRV) – One person was taken into custody after an alleged homicide in a downtown area early Thursday morning.

According to a release, an officer with the Columbus Police Department heard what sounded like fireworks going off in the downtown area. Upon arrival, he located an adult man who had been shot.

The officer attempted life-saving measures on the victim, but he was pronounced dead a short time later at a nearby hospital.

Through an investigation and review of various video camera footage, a suspect was identified, and he was taken into custody shortly before 2:00 p.m. in the city of Madison. The firearm believed to be involved in the alleged crime was located along the path where the suspect fled.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says they want to make it known that the public is not in any danger as the suspect is in custody and is believed to have acted alone.

A formal press conference is expected on Friday at 10:00 a.m., where more information will be released about the incident.
