Young mom and 2 kids, ages 1 and 3, stabbed in East Orange apartment

A New Jersey mother and her two young children were rushed to a hospital in critical condition after an apparent stabbing attack inside an East Orange apartment, according to local reports.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday inside a second-floor apartment on the corner of Park Ave. and N. 18th St., some 13 miles west of Lower Manhattan.

Surveillance camera footage indicates police responded to the scene around 1:30 a.m., RLS Media reported.

The woman, who’s believed to be in her 20s, and her two kids, ages 1 and 3, were rushed to University Hospital in Newark and remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

One of the children had just celebrated a birthday this week, neighbors told reporters.

“I am in complete and utter shock… and my heart is breaking right now,” one neighbor told WABC. “What have we come to? Two children and a mom? I don’t know what’s setting people off to do something like that.”

Neighbors say the family is well-known in the building. The woman, who has lived there her entire life, had recently lost both of her parents, according to CBS News.

It wasn’t immediately clear Thursday if somebody else lives in the apartment with the victims.

The incident is being investigated by East Orange Police. No arrests have been made as of Thursday afternoon.
