Sunny skies and seasonable temperatures are forecasted this morning and afternoon for much of North Jersey as Independence Day celebrations begin.

But come evening for fireworks displays, it’s anybody’s guess.

There is a 40% to 50% chance that northeast New Jersey will see showers and thunderstorms from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the Fourth of July, according to the National Weather Service.

“It doesn’t mean it’s going to be a washout but there is a chance that the area will see rain at that time,” said Joe Pollina, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

Will NJ and NYC fireworks be cancelled by rain?

How this will affect fireworks shows across the region remains to be seen. New Jersey’s Hudson River waterfront is expected to be packed with onlookers tonight as Macy’s is launching its much-anticipated fireworks show from the river for the first time in 11 years.

The weather threat is for the entire New York metropolitan area including the Hudson.

While rain has canceled smaller events in the past, many professional fireworks can be shot off in bad weather. Macy’s has moved up the start time for its show in the past due to rain, but has never canceled it in its 48-year history.

Most professional fireworks companies spend days in advance setting up their displays and making sure they are waterproof. And with the nature of fast-moving summer rainstorms, fireworks are often delayed but are eventually shot off the same night.
