Drier weather returns for the Fourth of July

Drier and hotter weather will return for most of New Mexico on the Fourth of July. A few isolated storms may be possible in southern New Mexico though.

Fewer storms developed Wednesday across New Mexico as drier air is moving in from the northwest. Even drier air is on the way for the Fourth of July. A few isolated storms will still develop in far southeast New Mexico though, with an isolated rain chance over the Sacramento Mountains. Temperatures will also be much hotter for the Fourth with sunny and mostly sunny skies across the state.

A backdoor cold front will begin moving into northeast New Mexico Thursday evening. This front will spill into the Rio Grande Valley Thursday night, bringing a gusty east wind into the Albuquerque Metro by midnight Friday morning. Winds will die down by 7 AM Friday though. Showers and storms will return Friday though Sunday afternoons across eastern New Mexico behind the backdoor front. Locally heavy rainfall will be possible with these storms, including over burn scar areas in both the Sacramento and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Another backdoor cold front will move through New Mexico Sunday night, and this one will bring a much strong east wind into the Albuquerque Metro through Monday morning. However, it will also bring even more moisture across the state. This will set the stage for more isolated afternoon storm chances through the middle of next week.
