Sinkhole limits Ocean City Expressway to one-way flagging operations heading into July Fourth weekend

Holiday weekend gridlock in Ocean City is off to a rough start.

A sinkhole near the base of the Isle of Wight Bay Bridge temporarily closed the Ocean City Expressway (MD Route 90) on Wednesday, Ocean City Police said Wednesday night.

“[The bridge] will experience intermittent closures due to repairs to a sinkhole near the base of the bridge,” police said.

The road that connects Ocean Pines on the mainland of Worcester County to Ocean City reopened to limited traffic later Wednesday night, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation.

“[MD Route 90] will transition to one-way flagging operations during repairs. This means [Route 90] will remain open to traffic. Delays are expected as they alternate traffic flow utilizing one lane around the repairs,” police said Wednesday night.

Police asked drivers to use Route 50 and Delaware Route 54 as alternatives.
