‘Cybersecurity incident’ in Apex forces town to limit some government services

The town of Apex is facing a “cybersecurity incident,” forcing the western Wake County municipality to limit some government services.

“We continue to operate the Town of Apex Government under normal hours, but with limited capacity, as we continue to investigate this matter and work to bring systems back online in a secure fashion and as quickly as possible. Again, all emergency services are fully operational,” according to information on the town’s website Wednesday afternoon.

Apex has launched an investigation and is in conversation with the North Carolina Joint Cybersecurity Task Force, and collaborating with “legal counsel, technical experts and cybersecurity professionals.”

The information was shared on the town’s website at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, but the “irregularities” were discovered Tuesday morning.

“We cannot help the timing — over the past 24 hours, we have been working to gather enough confirmed information to share,” said Stacie Galloway, communications director for the town.

The News & Observer asked whether resident or employee data was inappropriately shared and whether the town was facing a cyberattack or ransom. The questions were unanswered Wednesday afternoon.

An update is expected by noon July 4, Galloway said.
