5-hour Abilene swat standoff ends, suspect transported by ambulance

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, a small police presence gathered in the Alameda neighborhood. That presence grew over the following hour to include multiple units, the SWAT Bearcat, and the team. A portion of South 7th Street, Pueblo Drive, and Alameda Street were shut down as the evening progressed. The standoff ended just after 8:00 p.m. with the suspect, an unidentified adult black male, being loaded onto a stretcher and into an ambulance with apparent injuries.

Standoff underway in south Abilene

From 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., authorities called out to the suspect inside over a bullhorn, ordering him to exit with his hands up; that same command was issued to anyone else who might have been inside the home. Those multiple calls went unanswered, leading to further escalation.

Just after 7:00 p.m., gas was first deployed into the home, and calls through the bullhorn then increased in frequency and urgency. Authorities told the suspect they would not leave until he came out. Less than an hour later, another round of gas was deployed, and a subsequent call was made to inform the suspect that they knew he was in the attic and it would only become harder to breathe. Just before 8:00 p.m., another round was deployed through a side window.

Mere minutes after 8:00 p.m., things began to occur more rapidly. The bearcat briefly retreated and returned to the home, breaking a side window and administering more gas. Around 8:12, another call was made ordering the suspect to “Put the gun down” and come out with empty hands. Shortly following that, KTAB/KRBC crews on the scene heard a short round of rapid bursts that could not yet be identified, after which the SWAT team moved to the front and rear of the home. All calls from the bullhorn ceased at this time.

The silence was broken a few minutes later with the arrival of an ambulance. The suspect, a black adult male, was taken from the home and loaded into the ambulance. Our team on the scene said he did appear to be wounded. Abilene police have not yet released any official information on his condition or those of any officers involved.

There is no confirmation yet on whether or not shots were indeed fired or by whom. APD is expected to release further information as soon as they are able. Continue to check in with BigCountryHomepage for updates as they become available.
