Search underway in St. Lucie River following possible drowning in Port St. Lucie


PORT ST. LUCIE − Police Tuesday are searching the St. Lucie River near Southeast Port St. Lucie Boulevard after a reported possible drowning, a spokesperson said.

About 12:30 p.m. or 12:45 p.m., Port St. Lucie Police were called about the incident at an area referred to as the Twin Bridges on Southeast Port St. Lucie Boulevard just east of Southeast Floresta Drive, said Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, police spokesperson.

“Upon arrival, we confirmed with two other witnesses that they were in the company of a third party, and that third party went underwater,” Mesiti said. “Right now we’re looking for that third party who has not surfaced.”

Mesiti said police are using drones, a boat and a helicopter from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Additional details about the individuals and what was occurring prior to the apparent disappearance of the person in the water were not immediately available.
