Marine Corps veteran’s home receives roof makeover

MT. VERNON, Ill. – A Marine Corps veteran from Illinois is getting some major relief after having to struggle with treacherous conditions inside his own home.

“Yeah, it was much needed,” Maxie Moore Jr. said.

Moore watched as crews tore off his old roof, preparing to lay down a new one. He had been looking forward to this after dealing with many issues in the recent past.

“It started raining on the inside a few months back, yeah. And I couldn’t afford it. It’s getting done,” he said.

A Mt. Vernon native, Moore served in the Marines from 1976 through 1980.

Among his duties were guarding a major communications station in Hawaii for over a year. Once he was out, he spent time all over the country before returning home and getting involved in the community.

“We’ve always tried to give back to the community the entire 12 years that we’ve been in business,” Alpha and Omega Construction general manager Cory Norville said.

The new shingles were donated by Owens Corning, fresh wood was provided by RP Lumber, and Alpha and Omega Construction did the work.

Norville said it would have been an expensive job without the donations.

“This would have been probably a $30,000 project otherwise, with everything that’s getting done out here today,” he said.

Norville said they removed four layers of shingles and are using only one to replace them. Those removed shingles will be recycled.

They also repaired the plywood and framing. Norville said that will let the roof breathe, which will save money on heating, cooling, and keep the shingles from rotting.

“It’s good to give back to the local community. It always seems to come back to you in the end,” Norville said.

Norville said there are two more projects like this in the works. He hopes to get those done later this year.
