Police get ‘highly intoxicated’ man Uber ride before spotting him driving, charging him with DUI

A man was charged with DUI early Monday after a police sergeant who had gotten him an Uber ride home earlier because he appeared intoxicated spotted him driving on Route 12 in Ledyard, police said.

Robert W. Fabel, 49, was initially found by police sitting in his vehicle at Erickson Park when a sergeant who was speaking with him alleged that he was “highly intoxicated,” according to the Ledyard Police Department.

Police said they helped get him an Uber ride home before officers left the scene.

Shortly thereafter, the sergeant who had spoken to Fabel earlier spotted him driving in his vehicle on Route 12 shortly before 12:50 a.m., according to police. He was pulled over and charged with driving under the influence.

Police said Fabel was later released on a $1,500 non-surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on July 18.
