GRANITE CITY, Ill. – Army veteran Joshua Valezquez recently suffered a great deal due to a sewage backup in the basement of his of Granite City home; a backup that was not his fault.
Velazquez turned to the You Paid For It team after feeling stonewalled by Illinois American Water and city officials. His military uniforms were soaked in sewer water. FOX 2 contacted Granite City Mayor Mike Parkinson, who took care of that problem and got the uniforms cleaned.
Valezquez is still on the hook for $5,000 in cleanup costs in his basement from the backup.
Illinois American Water previously purchased the water treatment system from Granite City.

Terry Macklin, a spokesman for the water utility company, said employees have met with Valezquez multiple times and discussed a project that would prevent backups from happening in the future.
“We do have a project that’s in the design stage right now. We’re going to replace the pumping station at the intersection of St. Clair Avenue and Namoki Road. Replacing that pumping station will be huge; make a huge difference in that area,” he said.
Macklin said the company will do what it can to help Valezquez.
“We’re going to continue to help him as best we can. We’ve met with him, and I can tell you we’ll do everything we possibly can, Elliott,” he said.
