Family raising awareness about KCMO unsolved homicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Family and friends of 29-year-old Taylor Thomas met at her memorial site Sunday night to raise awareness about her unsolved homicide case.

“We’re going to be loud. We’re going to keep coming down here until someone answers questions,” Deannia Ellis, Taylor’s mother, said.

Taylor Thomas was a mother of seven.

Thomas’ family and friends want justice and answers.

They hope bringing awareness to the case could lead to information that could help investigators solve the homicide.

“She was a great mom and a great person,” Ellis explained.  “She was a CNA. She loved to help people and take care of them.”

Thomas was shot near the 3200 block of East Linwood Blvd. on June 17.

Her family members say this was only two days after her birthday.

When KCPD officers arrived at the scene, Thomas was unresponsive with gunshot wounds and taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

“She was just loved by a lot as you can see, and it’s a tragedy what happened,” Lawonia Carlton, Thomas’ mother said. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about my daughter. I just want the person who did this to get justice. I want justice for Taylor.”

Family and friends gathered at Thomas’ memorial site Sunday night along with the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime to pay tribute to Taylor.

“To let them know we are here and we’re not stopping. Somebody knows something. We want justice for our daughter,” Ellis said. “We just want someone to come forward.”

In KCPD’s most recent update on the case, police said that homicide detectives were making headway in identifying people connected to the shooting.

“This is the 71st homicide in Kansas City, already this year,” Ellis said. “That’s just ridiculous, and we want justice and this needs to stop. Gun violence is not okay.”

Thomas’s family members urge anyone with information about the shooting to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-8477. A reward of $25,000 is available for information that leads to an arrest.
