Cops arrest man who killed his neighbor, wounded pit bull in brutal Brooklyn stabbing

A Brooklyn man has been accused of killing his 37-year-old neighbor and wounding a pit bull in a crazed stabbing, police and sources said Sunday.

Anthony Fabato, 37, was arrested and charged with murder, robbery and aggravated cruelty to animals in the bloody slaying of Thomas Machalchick.

Police were called to the building on Sands St. near Jay St. in downtown Brooklyn just after 8 a.m. Friday, finding the victim on the 28th floor with a stab wound to his torso and a pit bull suffering from multiple knife wounds, cops and sources said.

Meanwhile, the stabber and his girlfriend ran to a different apartment in the building, which provides long-term housing for formerly homeless people, and locked themselves inside, barricading the door, the Daily News previously reported.

The couple surrendered shortly after police arrived and were taken into custody.

Medics rushed Machalchick to New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, but he could not be saved.

The wounded dog was taken to a local animal hospital in stable condition, police said.

Fabato was charged in the disturbing bloodshed Saturday afternoon. His arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court was pending Sunday night.

Both Machalchick and Fabato lived at the address, cops said.
