No charges filed against man who shot bear who entered his home in El Dorado County

(FOX40.COM) — The El Dorado County District Attorney Office said it would not file charges against a man who shot a bear cub that entered his South Lake Tahoe residence in May.

The district attorney’s office released a 6 page report detailing it’s investigation into the incident which ultimately found that the man shot the bear to protect against a reasonable threat to himself and his property.

According to the DA’s report, on May 27, the man said the bear entered his home through a backdoor which had been left open and advanced toward his dog.

The man said he attempted to scare the bear away before retrieving a gun and shooting the bear. The bear ran out of the house and up a tree before falling out.

The man said he shout the bear a third time “out of concern for its suffering.”

The man had previously reported to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife that in September 2021 a mother bear and her three cubs had broken into that same home and ransacked his fridge.

The district attorney’s office also determined the man’s discharge of a firearm did not pose a threat to the surrounding community.
