a receipt, tuna can, water jug

A Winn-Dixie receipt, an empty can of Bumble Bee tuna and a water jug were all the clues deputies needed to solve a garbage case.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was called on June 2 to a road obstruction — 860 pounds of trash — dumped in the middle of a dirt road near Pierson. The rubbish was on 9 Mile Point Road in front of the Lake George Wildlife Management Area entrance.

The pile contained bags of piping, vents and insulation, appearing to be associated with heating and air-conditioning work. As sheriff’s deputies helped residents clear the road, Deputy Kaelin Darcy spotted the receipt, which was from Winn-Dixie in Holly Hill with a date and timestamp. On it, were two cans of tuna, two jugs of spring water and the last four digits of a debit card number. The tuna can and water jug were amid the heap.

So Darcy and another deputy went the Winn-Dixie to review video surveillance of the purchase, producing leads on a possible suspect and a vehicle, a white van.

Using surveillance video along roads leading from the dump site, including U.S. 17, and interviews, Darcy wrote in her report she was able to locate three suspects who had been in the van on June 1.

One of the three said they had been working on an insulation job near the dump site and that they decided to leave it on a back road, rather than “deal with going to the dump in the morning,” the report states.

That suspect also told Darcy he had pointed to a state park sign and told one of the others it was a bad idea to leave the trash where they did, as it was likely there were surveillance cameras nearby.

A 51-year-old man and a 24-year-old man, both from Daytona Beach, and a 21-year-old man from Ormond Beach were each booked into the Volusia County Jail on a felony littering charge, then released this week, each on $2,500 bond. They have not yet appeared in court.
