Human remains found scattered across Suffolk County, 72-year-old arrested

A 72-year-old Long Island man was arrested and charged Friday with concealment of a corpse after human remains were found scattered along the Montauk Highway Thursday afternoon.

Prosecutors said Garry Cowell, of East Patchogue, is also charged with the tampering of physical evidence after he used an ax to chop a woman’s body into pieces, which he loaded into a shopping cart and spread throughout Suffolk County, according to News 12 Long Island.

The Suffolk County district attorney alleges Cowell was with the unidentified woman when she died, though he hasn’t been charged with her killing.

The suspect allegedly admitted to hacking up the victim’s body and showed cops the ax he used.

The family of missing Long Island woman Yvette Leonard was reportedly in court Friday for Cowell’s arraignment, according to News 12. She was last seen June 13.

Police haven’t confirmed the identity of the victim and Suffolk County officials haven’t responded to a request for comment. Details around the extent of the remains found are still pending.

Leonard’s son Malyk said on Facebook Friday that the body parts found are “believed to be my mother” while also clarifying the identity of the victim has not been confirmed.

He added that the man arrested in connection with the scattered remains was the last person known to have been with his mother.
