Ayatollah Khamenei kicks off Iran’s presidential election

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has voted in the presidential election in Iran.

Khamenei urged the nation to participate actively in the vote to “prove the correctness and honesty of the system of the Islamic Republic.”

The religious leader cast his vote in a high-security zone in the centre of Tehran before speaking to reporters.

Some 61 million voters in Iran are being called upon to elect a successor to Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.
