Tallahassee Police arrest man in connection to city’s first homicide of the year

A man faces charges for the capital city and county’s first homicide of the year.

Marquez Williams, 34, was arrested Thursday on a charge of second-degree murder. He is being held in the Leon County Detention Facility.

On New Year’s Day, officers found a man dead in the roadway of the 600 block of Osceola Street. TPD initially said the death was “possibly an accidental death caused by fireworks” in a online incident alert.

Once an autopsy was completed, the incident was declared a homicide, but until Thursday, it remained unclear whether the victim was killed with a gun or whether fireworks played any role in the death.

Details of the case have not been released in court records, but in a Thursday evening news release, TPD said “investigative findings reveal a man was setting off fireworks near the intersection of Main Street and Osceola Street when (Williams) approached him and engaged in a verbal dispute.”

“Williams walked to a nearby intersection nearly 200 feet away and fired a gun at the man,” TPD said.

Physical and electronic evidence, as well as “extensive interviews,” helped detectives identify Williams as the suspect, according to the news release.

TPD obtained warrants from the State Attorney’s Office and arrested him with the help of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Williams has a string of charges going back to 2011, including grand theft, domestic violence battery and aggravated assault with a firearm.
