Well, here’s everything you need to know about where to buy fireworks, safety precautions, and the laws on where to pop fireworks around Lubbock. And, perhaps more importantly, where not to!

As a reminder, it is illegal to use fireworks within the city limits of Lubbock as well as most municipalities around the area. If you wish to report suspected fireworks use, LPD urges citizens to use their online report form Coplogic on their website, Lubbockpolice.com, under the “Reports and Forms” tab.

What are the rules for buying fireworks in Lubbock?

According to City of Lubbock Ordinances, “no person may manufacture, sell or give away fireworks, or store, possess or use fireworks” within the city limits.

This also means individuals can not transport fireworks within the city limits. Doing so is a misdemeanor and individuals can be fined up to $1,000.

Poping outside the city limits is allowed; however, the Texas State Law has more stipulations. Fireworks can not be used within:

  • 600 feet of churches, hospitals, asylums, child care centers or schools

  • 100 feet of flammable liquids, gasses or objects

  • 100 feet of fireworks vendors

  • In or from a car

If individuals see firework usage within the city limits, they can use Lubbock Police Department’s online form — Coplogic — or call LPD’s non-emergency number at (806) 775-2865.

According to the National Integrated Drought Information System, no. As of Wednesday, June 26, only parts of Lamb, Terry, and Lynn County are currently affected by drought.

Even though Lubbock is not in a drought, fireworks pose a significant risk for both injury and fires, with Lubbock Fire Rescue responding to numerous calls for service for structure fires, grass fires, and dumpster fires.

As a result, the Fire Marshal’s Office has strengthened enforcement and patrol efforts and will continue throughout the coming weeks.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission annual report, there were 8 deaths caused by fireworks in 2023, with 9,700 people being sent to the ER for injuries.

About 42% of those injuries were from fireworks burns. In total, 66% of fireworks injuries in 2023 were seen in the weeks leading up to and after the July 4th weekend.

  • Never use fireworks if you have been drinking or using drugs.
