ANSON, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) — Hunting is a beloved sport across the Big Country, and to participate, you must have a hunting license. In Anson on Wednesday, students aged nine and above took the first step to engage in the activity.
The course combines lecture and demonstration, which instructor Dakota Fariss said helps keep the sport fun and safe.
“The importance of the demonstration is to teach muscle control. We don’t want to point our firearm in the wrong direction and injure an individual or individuals,” Farris said. “We just want these kids to understand that it needs to be a safe shot. It needs to be ethical… We want to follow the laws and regulations that Texas Parks and Wildlife has put in place for us. That way, we can serve wildlife and have a greater experience throughout the state.”
The course took place at the Anson Activity Center bright and early. Students like Kylynn Pattison learned the logistics of a sport she has always been around.
“We’ve been doing this for quite a while, and we’re doing education because it helps us learn safety and how to be hunters,” Pattison said.
She and her sister, Preslee Pattison, are learning new things with others in their age group.
“Game Wardens can go on your land, and they can do it without a permit from the state,” Pattison said. “They can do it without permission. They don’t have to have landowner consent to go onto the property to do a search,” Preslee recalled.
After completing this course, the students will have to take a 50-question test, which they must pass with a 75 or higher grade to get their hunting license.
