Berks man charged in friend’s drug overdose death

A Kutztown man faces felony charges after authorities in Bucks County accused him of selling fentanyl-laced cocaine to a friend who then fatally overdosed in 2022.

William R. Wright, 38, formerly of Springfield Township, Bucks County, was arrested June 18 following a lengthy investigation by Berks County detectives in cooperation with Springfield police, police said.

Wright is being held in Bucks County Prison in lieu of $750,000 bail to await a hearing on charges of drug delivery resulting in death, criminal use of a community facility, involuntary manslaughter and related charges in the death of a 62-year-old man.

The investigation was initiated by Springfield police on June 19, 2022, when they responded to an apartment building north of Quakertown and found a man dead in a bathroom.

An autopsy determined the victim died of an accidental death as a result of a combination of drugs including cocaine and fentanyl.

Police said they learned through a family member that the victim was addicted to drugs and had bought the substance from Wright. Police said detectives forensically downloaded the victim’s cellphone and found drug-related conversations between the two men.
