Daylily Festival returns July 6 at The Garden

The Western Kentucky Botanical Garden’s 15th annual Daylily Festival returns on July 6 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Laurna Strehl, the Garden’s executive director, said activities include Silent Disco, a photo booth, food trucks, a cash bar, petting zoo, face painters and a “bubble wonderland.”

But the main attraction for flower fans is the more than 800 varieties of daylilies in the Garden.

“Daylilies have long been the Botanical Garden’s claim to fame,” Strehl said.

“Dr. Bill Tyler has been hybridizing daylilies for over 20 years. He has a collection of them named in the Garden’s display bed with over 800 cultivars.”

She said, “The lily blooms are peaking now and the view is spectacular.

“So much color and height and variety of blooms that your brain can barely process it all. It creates the most unique and stunning backdrop for photos, and the photographers have been taking advantage of it.”

Strehl said, “Many special memories were captured just last week with an event conducted by Owensboro Health cancer survivors.

Ten photographers were stationed throughout the garden to capture the moment for survivors and their loved ones.”

She said, “Daylilies can be grown by anyone, as Owensboro has the perfect climate for them. They love the full sun. When the daylilies are in bloom, they do require daily maintenance. The garden has an employee to take care of them and deadhead them daily.”

Strehl said the Daylily Festival usually draws about 300 people.

She said the garden encourages visitors to take photos.

Align Wealth Management and Drew Watson are sponsoring the event.

Admission is $5 for adults. People 18 and under are admitted at no charge.
