Gunman in standoff with Sacramento police in Land Park near Fairytale Town, zoo

Sacramento police officers are “attempting to negotiate” with a reported gunman Friday afternoon in William Land Park near the entrance to Fairytale Town and the Sacramento Zoo.

The Police Department said in a social media post that officers were in the area of Land Park Drive and 17th Avenue for “reports of a man with a gun. Officers attempting to negotiate with the subject now,” officers said in an announcement.

Just before 1:45 p.m., officers said in an update: “Officers and negotiators still on scene attempting to negotiate a peaceful surrender of the subject.”

A Bee reporter at the park at 1:30 p.m. saw dozens of police cars crowded on park roadways and grassy areas amid a summer surge in vehicles. Parkgoers, including adults and children, were seen calmly getting into vehicles or moving outside of police tape.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area, including Sutterville Road from Interstate 5 to Freeport Boulevard.

Security at the Sacramento Zoo was unaffected, according to an zoo employee who spoke to The Sacramento Bee. A call to Fairytale Town was not answered but police spokesman Officer Anthony Gamble said “All nearby businesses have been advised.”

The Bee’s Emma Hall contributed to this story.
