Philadelphia man sentenced for drunken fatal crash on Turnpike

A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to three years in prison for a drunken crash on the New Jersey Turnpike that left his passenger dead.

Yvenson Louis, 32, was sentenced last week for the March 27, 2023 crash that claimed the life of 23-year-old Teyonna Balkman, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said.

Louis driving a 2012 Dodge Journey at high speeds around 3 a.m. that morning when he slammed into the back of a 2019 Volvo tractor-trailer on the southbound highway near mile marker 87.5 in Edison.

Balkman was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Louis sustained minor injuries. None of the other passengers in the Volvo or Dodge were harmed.

An investigation determined that Louis was under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana, and he was charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree vehicular homicide.

He pleaded guilty in April to charges of second-degree vehicular homicide and DUI.

Louis must serve at least 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole, will be on parole supervision for three years and lose his driver’s license for five years.
