Severe weather tracks through West Michigan


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The National Weather Service issued tornado and thunderstorm warnings across parts of West Michigan Sunday night.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect in Calhoun County until 11:30 p.m., and Allegan, Kalamazoo, Barry and St. Joseph counties until 10:45 p.m.

A brief tornado warning that was issued for Allegan, Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties has since been expired by the National Weather Service.

The weather has caused some power outages in the area. Around 8,677 people were without power in Michigan as of 10:30 p.m., according to the Consumers Energy power outage map:

  • Kalamazoo County: 3,920 customers without power

  • Van Buren County: 1,565 customers without power

  • Allegan: 1,381 customers without power

  • Barry County: 1,109 customers without power

A hazardous line of thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail between a half inch and an inch in diameter is moving east at approximately 30 mph.

Other severe thunderstorm warnings were issued earlier in Berrien, Allegan and Van Buren counties with similar threats of 1 inch hail and wind gusts near 60 mph.
