JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — The early-morning shooting death of 35-year-old Sherrod Slayton has left a Jackson neighborhood shocked.
Jackson Police say that around 2:51 this morning, officers responded to the 600 block of Elizabeth Street for a shooting.
When police arrived on scene, they found Slayton in a parking lot with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Officials pronounced him dead at the scene.
Kris Minix owns The Avenues Gentlemen’s Club, across the street from the parking lot where Slayton died.
“It’s very upsetting,” Minix said.
He said staff at his club who closed up around 2:20 a.m. saw a crowd forming by a food truck.

“She said there started to be a big crowd by Elizabeth Street, gathering to get food,” Minix said. “There was no fight at that time.”
Jackson ordinance cracks down on ‘nuisance crowds’
Minix said social media posts had alerted him and his staff to the shooting. A bar manager had gone back to check on the building. Minix said the manager had seen multiple first responders filling the street.
“EMS, police officers, fire trucks, it looked like day time, that’s how many people were here with their lights…on,” Minix said.
Police said an initial investigation had found there was a fight between Slayton and another man, who is considered a suspect. They say Slayton was running through the parking lot when he was shot.
