Which incumbents already won? Which drew opposition?

Most of Marion County’s constitutional officers faced no opposition and were automatically re-elected on Friday.

Qualifying period for local offices began noon June 10 and ended June 14 at noon. Since no challengers qualified, those guaranteed another four years are Greg Harrell, clerk of the circuit court and comptroller; Jimmy Cowan, property appraiser; Wesley Wilcox, supervisor of elections; and George J. Albright, tax collector.

Sheriff Billy Woods drew a challenger: fellow Republican Milton Simmons Busby Jr. Since both men are Republicans, the primary will be open to all registered voters.

So far, Woods and Busby have collected $146,440. 40 between them in campaign contributions. Woods has raised $129,315.

Here’s a look at the other local races that became set on Friday:

County commission

District 5 Commissioner Michelle Stone was automatically re-elected. Three people filed campaign paperwork, but they did not qualify for a ballot spot.

In District 1, incumbent Craig Curry faces fellow Republican Sarah Almeida Dennis. Since both candidates are Republicans, the primary will be open to all registered voters.

In District 3, Matt McClain faces fellow Republican David M. Blackwell. Since there is a write-in candidate, Rich Brown, the GOP primary will be closed to just Republicans. That winner will face Brown in the November general election.

School board

District 2 board member Lori Conard automatically won re-election. Robert Schmidt filed campaign paperwork but did not qualify for a ballot spot.

District 1 incumbent Allison B. Campbell faces former School Board member Beth McCall. Campbell has raised $25,675 to McCall’s $25,500 so far. All registered voters are eligible to vote in that race.
