Man was hit by a van was killed. Erie police seek witnesses, video

A man was killed Thursday night when he was struck by a vehicle at a west Erie intersection.

The accident was reported on Thursday at 10:10 p.m. at West 12th and Walnut streets, according to Erie County 911.

The victim, identified by the Erie County Coroner’s Office as a 55-year-old man, was crossing West 12th Street when he was struck by a Nissan NV200 cargo van that was traveling west on West 12th Street, according to police. It is believed that the man was walking north across West 12th Street and was either in or near the crosswalk, Sgt. Thomas Dunmire, an accident investigator with the Erie Bureau of Police, said Friday morning.

The pedestrian, whose name was not released Friday morning, was wearing dark clothing and was in an area that does not have great lighting, according to Dunmire.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:34 p.m. Thursday, according to the Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the Nissan, a 31-year-old man, was cooperative in the investigation, Dunmire said. The driver said he had the green light on West 12th Street at the time of the accident, but police are working to confirm that, Dunmire said.

Investigators will canvass the area of the accident to see if there are any security cameras that might have captured footage of the accident, Dunmire said. Police are also looking for any possible witnesses, and anyone with information is asked to call accident investigator Cpl. John Stephens at 814-870-1419.

Thursday night’s accident was the fifth fatal motor vehicle accident in Erie so far this year, according to Dunmire.
