Take a look inside Wells Fargo upgrades for employee operations in its uptown tower

With more than 48 floors at Wells Fargo’s skyscraper at 550 S. Tryon St., executives are giving employees new spaces to work or relax with some of the best views of uptown.

The bank made changes for employees on several floors that were once used by Duke Energy executives before Wells Fargo took over the building last year. It’s part of the company’s “Connections Initiative,” which are gathering spaces to improve Wells Fargo’s workplace experience, according to Valerie Goble, executive director of design and construction, and construction management manager Emily van Zyl.

Wells Fargo hosted an open house for employees at the uptown Charlotte office building Tuesday and Wednesday to show the changes. More than 2,000 people attended.

More than 6,000 employees work in uptown now, according to Wells Fargo officials.

What’s new at the Wells Fargo tower?

Floors 46 and 47 have multiple conference rooms and break spaces. Some of the other features include a coffee shop, work from local artists and large screens for presentations.

The 48th floor has work hubs for collaboration, and private booths and rooms for employees to work privately. There are also social spaces and a forum for presentations.

Wells Fargo built a library space and quiet zone where phone or conference calls are not allowed.

Changes on the 10th floor

The 10th floor has an enhanced micromarket with vending machines offering snacks and hot food options such as White Castle burgers and egg roles. Tables, chairs and restaurant-style booth seats are also nearby.

The floor also has an outside garden area with plants native to North Carolina and exterior WiFi. It reopened in January, along with the interior space.

Renovations are part of $500M, five-year investment

The upgrades are part of a five-year $500 million investment Wells Fargo announced last year. The company declined to say how much of that investment was earmarked for the 550 S. Tryon St. site.

Renovation work on floors 46, 47 and 48 began last summer and took nine months to complete, after a year and a half of planning, according to Wells Fargo.

Upgrades with similar additions are also being made for the Customer Information Center complex off W.T. Harris Boulevard in northeast Charlotte, which has more than 10,000 workers.

Wells Fargo is based in San Francisco but has its largest employment hub in Charlotte, with about 27,000 workers in the region and more than 247,000 worldwide.

In January 2023, Wells Fargo announced plans to moving all workers from two of its uptown Charlotte towers to consolidate at Three Wells Fargo Center at 401 S. Tryon St.; 300 S. Brevard St. and 550 S. Tryon St., where the open house was held. This included the iconic longtime home at 301 S. College St., the site of its 1980s-era building that resembles a jukebox.

Wells Fargo is still operating one floor at the College Street location, but employees are not working there, according to officials.
