Slight risk for severe weather tomorrow

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — We have two main focuses with the forecast for the next several days. The first is the potential for strong to severe storms tomorrow afternoon and evening. The second will be a potential heat wave moving into Mid-Michigan early next week.

Strong to Severe Storms are Possible on Thursday

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded portions of Lower Michigan, including Mid-Michigan, to a Level 2 of 5 Slight Risk for severe weather tomorrow.

We have two rounds of rain that we are tracking for tomorrow. The first will arrive early Thursday morning and exit around 10 or 11 a.m., with a few showers and non-severe thunderstorms across our area. Our severe weather potential will increase with our second round of storms, which will move in between 5 and 6 o’clock as a cold front begins to move through Mid-Michigan. Our severe weather threat will end around 11 p.m., with the primary concerns being damaging wind gusts and large hail. In addition, there is a chance for an isolated tornado in the area.

There are still a lot of questions on how much the first round of rain Thursday morning will affect or instability or the fuel needed to generate any severe storms in the evening. Our StormTracker 6 Weather Team will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates on-air, and online.

Potential Heat Wave Next Week

Temperatures will briefly cool for Friday and the start of the weekend, down into the upper 70s to low 80s, before the hot and humid weather returns to Mid-Michigan.

High Temperatures will be close to 90 degrees on Father’s Day, with dew points likely in the low 70s, which means it will be borderline uncomfortable outside.

Temperatures will stay in the low 90s as we move into the beginning of next week, which will not only allow for a potential heat wave in Mid-Michigan but will also churn up several chances for pop-up showers and storms.
