Stanley Black & Decker closing another facility in Charlotte area with over 220 layoffs

Stanley Black & Decker Inc. is closing its Kannapolis distribution center, leaving 224 people without jobs. It’s the second round of company layoffs in the Charlotte region this year.

Stanley Black & Decker Inc., headquartered in New Britain, Connecticut, will close its Concord facility at 1000 Stanley Drive as part of the company’s “changes to its manufacturing and distribution network,” according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) filed Friday with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Just three months ago, the toolmaker said it will close its Fort Mill manufacturing plant, with nearly 200 layoffs. That means the company is displacing over 400 workers in the region to date this year.

The Concord facility layoffs will begin in phases starting Aug. 5 and continue through October 2025, Stephen Eaglen, vice president of supply chain Americas for Stanley Black & Decker, said in a letter to the state and city of Concord Mayor Willian Dusch.

It’s possible some employees may be offered transfers to other areas, Eaglen said in the letter.

Stanley Black & Decker officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

The 4260 Pleasant Road facility layoffs began May 10, and the site will close by the end of the year.

Also in March, the company said it would close its manufacturing plant in Mission, Texas, by the end of August with 127 layoffs.

Last year, Stanley Black & Decker laid off about 355 workers closing facilities in Tennessee and Cheraw, S.C. However, about 80 jobs from South Carolina were transferred to two facilities in Gallatin and Jackson, Tennessee.

And just last week, the company said it is cutting 84 jobs at its Jackson facility beginning in August as part of changes to its manufacturing and distribution network, according to Tennessee TV station WBBJ. A separate manufacturing plant in Jackson with 100 employees will not be affected.
