Wisconsin workers’ average pay jumps 5.3% from last year


Wisconsin workers’ pay rose over 5% from a year ago at this time, slightly outpacing the national average, according to a new report.

The June 5 report from payroll company ADP shows that the median annual pay in Wisconsin in May reached $59,000, up 5.3% from a year ago. That slightly beat out the nationwide median pay of $58,300 and 5% increases.

ADP’s report uses salary data from about 10 million employees over a 12-month period to calculate the data, it said in a media release.

The report also showed that the youngest workers were the biggest beneficiaries of this nationally, with those between 16 to 24 getting a 11.6% bump in median year-over-year annual pay. That strongly outpaced the 25-to-35 age group, which had the second-highest bump, at 7.1%.

Those 55 to 85 years old had the smallest bump, at 3.3%.

That same report showed that, nationally, people who change jobs saw higher spikes than those who stayed in their jobs. While stayers got a 5% increase, those who switched jobs got a 7.8% increase.

The list also broke down median pay changes by gender, industry and firm size on a national level.

Women fared slightly better than men, with a 5.3% increase in median pay and men at 4.7%.

By industry type, with 10 fields ranked, education and health services jobs and leisure and hospitality jobs saw the biggest jump, at 5.5%. Other industries weren’t far behind, with the lowest jumps at 4.4%.

As for firm size, companies with 50 to 249 employees saw the biggest growth at 5.2%. The smallest companies, at one to 19, saw the lowest, at 4.2%.

ADP’s figures are slightly higher than what USA TODAY reported in February. That report showed that the average annual salary in Wisconsin was $58,552.

The United States Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported its official statistics for May 2023 in April 2024. At that time, it said the annual average wage was $59,500 out of 2,885,990 workers in Wisconsin. Nationally, the annual average wage was $65,470.
