Goodwill laying off 136 workers, closing Milwaukee laundry and linen services facility

Goodwill Manufacturing, Inc., is laying off 136 employees from its commercial laundry and linen services in Milwaukee.

The layoffs will take effect Aug. 3 and stem from the company permanently closing its laundry and linen services facility at 6055 N. 91st St., according to a notice submitted Tuesday to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

“We have taken a thorough approach to get to this point, and we are confident that although it is not ideal, we have made the right decision,” Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin and Metropolitan Chicago said in a statement.

Each employee losing their job will be paid all earned wages and agreed-upon benefits at the time of their termination, Goodwill said. The company also said it’ll offer resources to help employees secure other jobs both inside and outside the company. Those resources include counseling, interviewing skills and resume and job-search assistance.

“We remain committed to our employees during this transition and ensure people are supported through the closure of the business,” the statement said.

Representatives from the Service Employees International Union, which represents some of the employees, didn’t respond to a request for an interview.

Goodwill Industries operates retail stores and workforce-training programs for low-income residents and people facing barriers to the workforce. Since 1974, Goodwill also has operated a commercial laundry when it began serving the laundry needs of the Naval Station Great Lakes in northern Illinois.

Since then, its customers include hospitals, clinics and nursing homes throughout southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Goodwill operates one of the largest laundry facilities in Wisconsin, processing over 13 million pounds of laundry annually for health care providers, the military and clinics throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
