A melon-sized hail stone found Sunday could be the largest-ever in Texas, experts say

A hail stone that fell near Vigo Park in the Panhandle during severe storms on Sunday may be the largest in Texas history, experts say.

Val and Amy Castor, storm chasers for News 9 in Oklahoma City, found the hail on the side of a road in Swisher County. Val Castor posted photos to social media, estimating a diameter of about 7.25 inches, approximately the size of a small cantaloupe, which would break the existing record.

What’s the current record in Texas for the largest hail stone?

Prior to this weekend, the largest hail seen in Texas was about 6.4 inches. It fell in Hondo in April 2021.

Although experts are claiming the stone from the recent event likely made history, it can take weeks before the Texas State Climate Extremes Committee confirms its official record-breaking status.
