Virginia casino resort an hour from Triangle still set to open this year; casino in NC mountains expands gaming floor

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As folks in central North Carolina continue to eye the completion of a casino less than 60 miles from Durham, a major expansion is partially complete at an existing casino in the North Carolina mountains.

Right now, Caesars Virginia casino in Danville, just a mile from the North Carolina border, is operating out of a temporary location but still offers live table games, 28 electronic games and 740 slot machines.

The location in Danville — in a 40,000-square-foot luxury tent — is just 57 miles from Durham.

The temporary location opened a year ago and pulled in $11 million in revenue during the first few weeks, WFXR reported.

A full-scale resort is set to open later this year, with a gaming floor that will include more than 1,300 slots and 85 live table games.

But, plans for the Danville have been scaled back slightly because of rising costs, WFXR reported last month.

The Caesars entertainment venue and conference center will be consolidated into one site, but will still seat up to 2,500 for concerts like those at other Caesars properties. The hotel was set for 500 rooms but now will be around 320.

Meanwhile, in the North Carolina mountains, the Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River casino in Murphy has expanded their casino floor as part of an overall $275 million expansion, according to a company news release this week.

The additions to the casino include 25,000 more square feet with 300 new slot machines and eight additional table games.

A “World Series of Poker” Poker Room has also been added with cash games like Three Card Poker and Texas Hold’em, the company said this week.

The entire expansion at Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River also includes a new 296-room hotel tower, and a 1,700-space parking deck.
