2024 Eagle Medallion Hunt clues explained

This year’s medallion was affixed to the bottom of a set of bleachers at McAdams Park.

Here are each day’s clues and what they meant.

Day One

Salutations to those who seek the prize.

$1,000 to learn the truth is where it lies?

Well now, that sounds like a deal.

Avoid poison ivy, avoid the wheal.

The second line “to learn the truth is where it lies” is a play on Janis Ian’s lyrics in the song “At Seventeen.” McAdams Park abuts 17th Street. Unlike in some parks, there is no poison ivy anywhere near where the medallion was hidden. It is hidden in a flat section, not near any hills or raised areas (wheal).

Day Two

Morning, afternoon, evening, night.

One’s not allowed, so get it right.

Joe was born there, back against the wall.

Also don’t forget: the medallion is small.

The first two lines tell hunters that the medallion is hidden in a park, which is not open at night. The third line tells hunters the medallion is in the city of Wichita, birthplace of rock musician Joe Walsh, whose song “In the city” includes the lyrics “I was born here in the city / With my back against the wall.”

Day Three

A clue that’s contained. Give it some thought.

What we’re giving you is more than a lot.

Think of a phoenix, and the source of the heat.

This one was born from once-shiny meat.

The city of Wichita bought the land that is now McAdams Park as a way to get cash to the owners of the Dold Meatpacking Plant after it was destroyed in a fire in 1901. The land is “more than a lot” and was birthed by a fire like a phoenix. “Once-shiny” = dulled = Dold.

Day Four

Did you find it yet? No need to yelp.

All of these clues are here to help.

All you need is to search and discover:

The secret’s between one 35 and another.

The medallion was hidden between I-135 (one 35) and the Antoine Carr Basketball Courts, named after Wichita hoops star who for much of his career wore No. 35 on his jersey.

Day Five

Almost done. Seven days, seven clues.

You found the big dog. Now, go for the goose.

If you figured out the Day Four clue, you found the Antoine Carr courts. Carr’s playing nickname in the NBA was “Big Dawg.” The medallion was hidden in the set of bleachers between the courts and the Charles “Goose” Doughty, Jr. Tennis Courts.

It was after this clue that longtime medallion hunter Mary Smith found the disk. Here are the final two clues that would have appeared had the hunt continued.

Day Six

Courtney and Justin, Jonah and Pete.

Marshall, Marilyn and Nick from Backstreet.

They all copied Jean, the OG bombshell.

They are what they did – a sort of farewell.

Courtney Love, Justin Timberlake, Jonah Hill, Pete Davidson, Marshall Mathers, Marilyn Monroe, Nick Carter and Jean Harlow all said farewell to their natural hair color by bleaching. They were “bleachers.” The medallion was affixed under a set of bleachers at McAdams Park.

Day Seven

Meaningful ideas are gems that are near.

But the one that you want is usually clear.

There’s one final hint that we will impart:

It’s at the beginning – go back to the start.

The bleachers where the medallion was hidden sat next to a baseball diamond – a gem that is usually clear.

The final two lines direct readers to look at the beginning from the back to the start, where the first letter of each clue spelled backwards reveals the name of the park: “McAdams.”
