Recreational dispensaries across the state want to start selling marijuana, but one local city said it would not allow it.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11, at Monday’s Oakwood City Council meeting leaders said selling marijuana was not in the best interest of the city.

“It just doesn’t make sense to have an actual operator selling,” Steven Byington, vice mayor of Oakwood said.

That’s why the city council unanimously voted to say no to recreational marijuana dispensaries.

“We really wouldn’t see that as a business we want,” Byington said.

Several neighbors said they did not understand the point of banning dispensaries when someone can just drive to a neighboring city’s dispensary.

“People will still be able to use the product, they will be able to process the product,” Byington said. “They could buy it anywhere else.”

The city’s charter gives the city council the ability to decide what business can come to Oakwood.

“It allows us to decide what we think is in the best interest of our community,” Byington said.

The city council cannot stop people from growing legal amounts of marijuana or using it in the city.
