Pilbara Ports has awarded two construction contracts for Lumsden Point project at the Port of Hedland in Western Australia (WA).

Jan De Nul (Australia) has secured the contract for dredging and land reclamation.

This contract will see the creation of a new access channel, a swing basin, and berth pockets, enhancing the port’s capacity to accommodate non-tidally restricted vessels.

Jan De Nul is set to mobilise to the site this month, with dredging expected to commence in September 2024.

The second contract has been awarded to MGN Civil for the construction of a causeway that will link the new wharf to the proposed logistics hub area.

Construction began earlier in April this year, following the recent completion of the seawalls in March.

The development of Lumsden Point is expected to help the export of battery metals such as lithium and copper concentrates and the import of renewable energy infrastructure, including wind turbines and blades.

It also aims to support the growth of direct shipping services to the Pilbara region.

Infrastructure Australia is said to have recognised the expansion of Pilbara Ports as a national infrastructure priority.

In addition, the Australian and WA governments are jointly investing in the Lumsden Point project to bolster trade and economic growth in the Pilbara and beyond.

Specifically, the Australian Government is investing A$565m ($374.71m), with A$450m allocated for the development of new multiuser facilities and berths at Lumsden Point.

The WA Government is contributing A$96.6m to this initiative.

WA Ports Minister David Michael said: “The Pilbara is the economic powerhouse of the nation, and the Lumsden Point project will ensure it remains that way well into the future. This vital infrastructure will facilitate trade growth at the port and position Port Hedland at the forefront of future green industries.

“The completion of the seawalls and recent award of the dredging and land reclamation and causeway construction contracts represent significant milestones in the project’s advancement which will drive economic growth and regional employment opportunities.”
