Martha Stewart ‘never leaves the house’ without this tinted sunscreen, recommended by her dermatologist

While you probably know Martha Stewart for her top-notch cooking, gardening and all-around domestic know-how, there’s something to be said about her skin-care efforts as well. The 82-year-old self-made billionaire had a candid conversation with her dermatologist, Dr. Dan Belkin, on her podcast, sharing that she has used Botox, fillers, peels and skin-tightening treatments. “I don’t think a lot about age, but I don’t want to look my age at all. And that’s why I really work hard at it,” she said. She also shared that she “never leaves the house” without wearing sunscreen, specifically one her doctor recommended: Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen.

Alastin

Swap out your foundation for this tinted sunscreen — you’ll get a glowy complexion and proven sun protection. For a limited time, when you purchase the full-sized product, Alastin will gift you the travel size for free.

$76 at Alastin

The dermatologist-approved sunscreen is hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic and fragrance-free, so it’s especially great for those with sensitive skin. It has a broad-spectrum SPF 36 to provide UVA and UVB sun protection, but it’s super lightweight — not greasy or sticky at all — and it’s water-resistant for up to 40 minutes. It’s also packed with antioxidants to protect skin from blue light (like from your computer or phone), pollution and infrared rays. And it’s tinted, so it can brighten and even out your skin tone — we love a multitasker.

Alastin is a company that a lot of dermatologists really like,” Belkin said. “The sunscreen is just a sunscreen, but the tinted sunscreen has more coverage, so it has more UVA coverage, and UVA is the type of UV that causes aging — signs of aging. So to have a tint means that you’re blocking more of the UVA and typically you get better coverage with that.”

Stewart shared that she mixes her Alastin tinted sunscreen with a little serum to thin it out, then applies it all over her face, chest, lower arms and hands. She also said that she likes the light bronze-y color it gives her. But most importantly, “it really works,” she said.

Stewart and her doctor aren’t the only ones who love Alastin. TikTok users have been raving about it for the last few years, with many using it in place of foundation — me included. I picked up my first bottle about two years ago, and I never wear foundation anymore. It gives my skin just enough coverage, even on days when my rosacea is flaring up, without looking or feeling too heavy.

However, there are some downsides. First, it only comes in one color. For me, the color blends seamlessly into my skin, whether it’s the dead of winter or I have a nice summer tan, but some users may have to mix it with their foundation or some bronzing drops. And it’s definitely not cheap — one 3.2-ounce bottle is $76. That said, a little goes a long way, and one bottle lasts me almost a whole year. (One pump is enough to cover my face each morning.)

You can purchase Stewart’s go-to sunscreen on Amazon or at select dermatologists’ offices, but if you get it from Alastin, you can subscribe to save a little extra cash, plus get free shipping and a free gift. Still, if you’re looking to spend less than Stewart — and we certainly don’t blame you — Yahoo Life’s beauty editor has rounded up her favorite tinted sunscreens for 2024, and they start at just $14. (You can also get Martha’s glow minus the SPF courtesy of an affordable L’Oreal lotion.)
