City of Gadsden sets out new flags along Meighan Boulevard, Rainbow Drive for Memorial Day

The City of Gadsden is commemorating Memorial Day by lining local roadways with new U.S. flags.

Crews began setting out 157 flags on Wednesday morning, according to a news release, along Rainbow Drive (U.S. Highway 411) and Meighan Boulevard (U.S. Highway 431/278).

City of Gadsden crews on Wednesday began setting out 157 U.S. flags on the city’s major thoroughfares to commemorate Memorial Day. These flags are on Meighan Boulevard (U.S. Highway 431/278) ,in front of the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant.

New ground anchors also are being installed, according to the release. They are flush with the ground, which should facilitate grass cutting and maintenance for city crews.

“Memorial Day is about more than just marking the start of summer — it’s a time to pause and remember those who gave their lives serving our country,” said Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford, who also is a major in the Army Reserve and commands the training facilities at Fort McClellan in Anniston.

“Gadsden has a strong tradition of patriotism and service, so we want to make sure we honor that with new displays along our city’s major thoroughfares,” Ford said.
