FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Preservation efforts began Tuesday on the asphalt road along Highway 99 from Shields Avenue overcrossing to the Merced County line, Caltrans announced.
Caltrans says the project will encompass Shields Avenue to Nees Avenue along Highway 99 and last for the next six months.

In conjunction with Granite Construction Company, Caltrans says they will restore and resurface the asphalt pavement with both Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and Rubberized Hot Mix Asphalt (RHMA).
Not only will road conditions improve, but officials add traffic monitoring stations, modify changeable message sign systems, and modify traffic lighting systems will be upgraded.
These road preservation efforts may not come as a surprise for those who frequent the area as Caltrans says due to the heavy truck traffic, the existing pavement has undergone considerable distress and cracking.
Officials say the project is intended to improve safety for travelers by minimizing frequent maintenance lane closures and reducing exposure to maintenance personnel in high-speed traffic.
