Gaston County teacher accused of sexually assaulting child

A Gaston County teacher is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a child he was coaching in Lincoln County, and he is facing similar charges in Catawba County, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Maxwell Sidney Fletcher, 30, is accused of giving the boy, who was under the age of 15, a “large amount of alcohol” and a pill, which incapacitated the child, and then sexually assaulting him, said Detective David Hendrix.

The assault, which is alleged to have taken place at Fletcher’s home in Lincoln County, is said to have occurred several years ago, Hendrix said. He declined to say exactly when.

Fletcher was arrested Friday in Gaffney, South Carolina, and extradited to North Carolina, where he appeared before a judge on Tuesday. He is charged with a statutory sex offense of a child under the age of 15. His bail is set at $350,000 secured.

At the time of his arrest, Fletcher was a teacher at W.C. Friday Middle School, where he taught construction and carpentry, according to an archived version of the school’s website. As of Tuesday, his name no longer appeared on the website. Gaston County Schools did not respond to questions about Fletcher’s employment status.

Fletcher also is charged in Catawba County with second-degree kidnapping, indecent liberties with a child, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and sexual battery. Deputies with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office told WSOC-TV that Fletcher is accused of sexually assaulting a child at a home he rented for several days.
