Azule Energy Angola SPA has awarded Saipem SPA engineering works for the Ndungu field offshore Angola, in a contract worth $850 million.

“Saipem’s scope of work entails the engineering, fabrication, transportation and installation of approximately 60 km [37.3 miles] of rigid pipelines and of the subsea facilities at a depth of around 1,100 meters [3,608.9 feet], and the transportation and installation of flexible flowlines, jumpers and 17 km [10.6 miles] of umbilicals”, Saipem said in a press release.

Fabrication will be executed in Saipem’s yard in Ambriz, Angola, while it expects to deploy its own vessel for the installation part of the work.

“The award of this important project further consolidates Saipem’s positioning in Angola, both in deep waters and in shallow waters, through the provision of innovative and efficient solutions to reduce installation times”, Saipem said in the announcement on its website.

The already producing Ndungu, located about 130 kilometers (80.8 miles) from the coast and part of Block 15/06, is estimated to hold 800–1,000 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) resources according to Eni SPA, a co-venturer in the company that owns Ndungu developer Azule Energy.  Azule Energy’s parent company is Azule Energy Holdings Ltd., a 50-50 co-venture between Eni and BP PLC.

Ndungu started production two years ago through the Ndungu Early Production (EP) Project. Connected to the Ngoma floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) ship, Ndungu EP had a rate of about 20,000 barrels of oil per day according to Eni’s announcement of startup February 25, 2022.

Ndungu is part of the East Hub and West Hub projects in Block 15/06. Besides Ndungu, also part of the projects are the Agogo field, which uses FPSO Ngoma, as well as the Cuica and Cabaça North fields, which use FPSO Armada Olombendo.

The operator, Azule Energy, was formed 2022 when Italian government-controlled Eni and British rival BP agreed to combine their Angolan assets. “Azule Energy is now Angola’s largest independent equity producer of oil and gas, holding 2 billion barrels equivalent of net resources and growing to about 250,000 barrels equivalent a day of equity oil and gas production over the next 5 years”, BP said in a statement August 2, 2022.

“It holds stakes in 16 licenses (of which 6 are exploration blocks) and a participation in Angola LNG JV. Azule Energy will also take over Eni’s share in Solenova, a solar company jointly held with Sonangol, and the collaboration in the Luanda Refinery”.

Earlier than the Ndungu engineering contract, Italian oil and gas service provider Saipem had also been tapped for the Agogo field in the same block. The contract for the Agogo Full Field Development Project, which sits around 180 km (111.8 miles) off the coast in deep waters, encompassed engineering, procurement, construction and installation of rigid pipe-in-pipe flowlines with associated subsea structures, Saipem said April 3, 2023.

Saipem had also won a completion and testing job for development and exploration wells in Block 15/06, as announced by the company November 15, 2022. This contract was to start 2023 and last 26 months.

In other Azule Energy assets, Saipem was also in 2022 the choice for the New Gas Consortium. “With an overall value of around 900 million USD, Saipem is taking care of the engineering, procurement and construction, including hook-up and commissioning assistance, of the Quiluma platform and of the relevant onshore natural gas processing plant”, Saipem said August 11, 2022.
