Hot weather to hit Seacoast. Will temps reach 90?

It might be time to put in the air conditioners. Hot weather is coming mid-week to Seacoast New Hampshire and southern York County, Maine, a sneak peek at the hotter than normal summer expected in 2024.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, said temperatures will spike for the next few days.

A lifeguard keeps watch at Hampton Beach on a hot summer day.

“We will start warming up (Monday) and there will be a real temperature difference between the Seacoast areas and further inland,” meteorologist Michael Clair said.

Hottest day in Seacoast will be Wednesday, forecaster says

Monday was expected to peak in the mid-70s for Portsmouth and other areas in the Seacoast Region of New Hampshire and Maine, he said. On Tuesday, the weather service is forecasting upper 70s on the local coast and into the low 80s inland.

“Wednesday will be the hottest day of the week,” Clair said. “The coastal areas will be in the mid- to upper 80s, while inland will hit the 90s.”

The temperatures will start to go down by Thursday, Clair said, mostly in the 80s. and temperatures will cool a little more at night.

“I am not seeing any great numbers for the humidity,” he said. “The air will mostly be on the dry side, with Wednesday maybe being more humid. I do not see any signs of days with poor air quality but that is really only looked at a couple of days ahead of time, so that could change towards Wednesday.”

At this point it doesn’t appear temperature records will be broken this week. Clair said New Hampshire records are tracked in Concord, where temperatures of 97 degrees for May 21 and and 96 degrees for May 22 are the records.

This week’s weather won’t qualify as a heat wave, Clair said. By definition, a heat wave consists of abnormally hot weather, lasting for two or more days.

Clair said he wants to remind people while the air temperatures are climbing, the ocean water temperature remains cold, generally in the 50s.

What to expect for weather for Memorial Day weekend

By the end of the week and into the weekend, Clair said it looks like temperatures will return to the 60s and 70s.

“I don’t see any rain in the forecast yet for the weekend,” he said. “It should be sunny and dry.”

Hot summer ahead in Seacoast, thanks to La Nina

Overall, Clair said, climate patterns indicate we are facing a pretty warm summer.

“It looks more likely than not that we will see higher than normal temperatures,” Clair said. “The El Nino we saw last year has been transitioning to a La Nina weather pattern this year. La Nina is the opposite of El Nino. and that tends to lead to warmer weather for the summer.”
