State Attorney’s Office drops charges against Antwan Glover

BARTOW, Fla. (WFLA) — A year-and-a-half after Antwan Glover was punched by Lakeland police officers during a traffic stop, his charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting officers with violence were dropped on Tuesday.

A notice from Assistant State Attorney Katherine Artman said the charges against Glover “cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”

This comes after Glover’s family and activists have pushed for months for the charges to be dropped.

“Changed my life a lot,” said Antwan Glover of his arrest.

Lakeland police officers said they stopped Glover in December 2022 for not wearing a seatbelt but smelled marijuana and ordered him out of the car.

“He’s asking me if I have a pistol in my satchel around my neck,” Glover previously recalled to 8 On Your Side. “I said, ‘No sir, I don’t. I have a medical marijuana license is what I have.’”

While Glover tried to explain himself, he ended up on the ground, where he was punched by the officers. That was caught on video by a family member with Glover at the time.

“I already knew where it was about to head,” Glover remembered. “So, as I attempted to get out of the car like the officer asked me to, he closed me in the car door.”

State Attorney Brian Haas declined to charge those officers and said Glover posed a threat to the officers. A Lakeland Police Department internal investigation also exonerated the officers. Investigators found Glover put an officer in a headlock, which he denied.

In February, his mother explained why she believed her son.

“No, we not interested in nothing,” Pamela Glover said. “Charges dropped. Because, if anybody knows, Lakeland Police Department, if my son had anybody in a headlock, he wouldn’t be here to hug me today. So no charges. Dropped.”

8 On Your Side has reached out to Glover’s family via his attorney, State Attorney Brian Haas and the Lakeland Police Department for comment on the case.
