Pinellas parents arrested for leaving 3-year-old home alone all day

LARGO — A Largo couple was in custody Saturday after being arrested on accusations of repeatedly leaving their 3-year-old child home alone for hours at a time.

Milton Lutala-Tapin, 27, and Nancy Lutala-Tapin, 28, face felony child neglect charges after investigators found the 3-year-old at their home unsupervised, according to a police report.

An officer went to the home after being contacted by an employee at Frontier Elementary School, which had received a report that the child was left alone daily from about 9 a.m. until after school, while the parents went to work.

According to police, the child answered the door, and the officer entered the house. While there, the officer saw the child had two mattresses, clothing strewn about, and a poorly stocked mini refrigerator with little to drink and a browned half-eaten apple to eat.

“The child had no supervision, food or beverages and would not have known how to contact 911 or call for help in the event of an emergency,” the report stated.

The couple was arrested Thursday and remained in jail Saturday afternoon, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. Nancy Lutala-Tapin also was being held on an additional immigration charge.
